Event: Germany's 2025 election and its aftermath | 16 June 2025, 18.30pm

Keynote Speaker: Kai Arzheimer, Professor of Political Science, University of Mainz

The collapse of Germany's 'traffic light coalition' in November 2024 triggered a snap election on February 23rd. Its outcome was a shock, but no surprise. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) doubled its vote share to 21%, and the far-left Linke party also experienced a surge in support. Conversely, the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU), Germany's (former) mainstream parties, achieved their worst and second-worst post-war results respectively, creating considerable challenges for forming a stable government. Given the ongoing economic and geopolitical pressures facing Europe – challenges also keenly felt here in Greece – Germany's traditional role as a pillar of stability has been called into question. This talk will explore the factors driving these electoral results and their implications for Germany, Europe, and the future of European integration. The Hellenic Political Science Organization is co-organizer and partner in this event.

Keynote Speaker will be Mr Kai Arzheimer, Professor of Political Science, University of Mainz. Mr Arzheimer is leading expert on political extremism, the far-right and voter behavior.
