Online discussion - German-Greek relations: Old Issues, New Opportunities?

On Wednesday, 23 March 2022 at 16:00-17:30 (EET)/ 15:00-16:30 (CET) the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) in cooperation with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) in Athens are organizing an online discussion on: German-Greek Relations: Old Issues, New Opportunities?

Due to an extensive web of political, economic, cultural and societal relations, Germany and Greece have enjoyed close ties, further bolstered by their joint NATO and EU membership. The war in Ukraine has once again highlighted the importance of these alliances. Still, controversial issues cast a shadow on this stable relationship, negatively affecting public opinion in both countries. Among the controversies are the working up of the past reaching back to World War II, the aftermath of the Euro crisis and, more recently, Berlin’s Turkey policy and role in Greek-Turkish disputes.

In this panel, our experts will shed light on the following issues:
- Taking stock: Where do relations between Greece and Germany stand today from Berlin’s viewpoint?
- Looking ahead: What may we expect from the new German government regarding Greek affairs?
- Giving advice: What needs to be done for the controversial issues to be overcome?

Speakers:

  • Lisa Badum, Member of the Bundestag, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen
  • Jens Bastian, Senior Policy Advisor, ELIAMEP
  • Arne Schildberg, Head of Office, Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Athens

Moderator: Ronald Meinardus, Non-resident Senior Research Fellow, ELIAMEP

The event will be held in German with simultaneous interpretation in Greek on Wednesday 23 March 2022, at 16:00-17:30 (EET)/ 15:00-16:30 (CET) and live streaming will be available on the ELIAMEP website and on ELIAMEP’s official accounts on Facebook and YouTube.
